Google Play, formerly Android Market, is a digital distribution platform for applications for the Android operating system and an online electronics and digital media store, operated by Google. The service allows users to browse and download applications developed with the Android SDK and published through Google. Music, magazines, books, movies, and television programs are served in specific countries. Users can also purchase hardware, such as Chromebooks, Google Nexus-branded mobile devices, Chromecasts, and accessories, in specific countries.

The Google Play Store originated from three distinct products: Android Market, Google Music, and Google eBookstore. The Android Market was made available to users on October 22, 2008,[1] and was rebranded in March 2012 as Google Play.[2]
